Mark van Diggelen, CEO Trafficonomy (Full Time Gamer and Search Optimizer)

Well who am I? I am a 38 year old South African, born and bred in the city of Pretoria. I went to Waterkloof Primary School and later to Pretoria Boys High. I matriculated with full exemption in 1986 and headed off to complete my mandatory military service in the South African Defence Force in 1987. I was posted to 6 South African Infantry Unit in Grahamstown and later moved to the Military Police unit at the same base. They say military service is the best 2 years of your life that you never wish to experience again. The one thing I can say is that it is a pity that the young boys of today do not have the “privilege” of experiencing the army, you go in a young know it all, bad attitude teenager and come out a better balanced, mature young man.

After my national service, I had the privilege of touring Europe. On my return I was faced with the question of which career would I want to follow - I had no idea. My Dad, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago, enrolled me into a Business Management course, I was reluctant to take the course at first, but decided to give it a chance. Two of the subjects included computer studies and these quickly became my favorite subjects. I decided to study Cobol programming during the day and complete the management diploma during the evenings. I completed both with flying colors. The challenge then was to find a job, where I could fully exploit my newly acquired skills, sadly I never got or have ever had a position that allowed me to exploit my software development skills.

I started off my career as an Admin Clerk for Olivetti Systems and Networks and within 3 months got promoted to Assistant Admin Manager, quiet a position for a 22 year old. Olivetti went through some major restructuring and gave me the opportunity to move into the online world through their downsizing initiatives. I joined CPS (Property24.com as it is known today) as a Customer Support Analyst and again quickly moved up the ranks to Regional Sales Manager, I was the youngest person, by 16 years, to hold a management position in the companies history. I received a number of Top Achiever Awards during my time at CPS.Late in 1994, I decided to launch my own business, IT Solutions (Pty) Ltd. Times were getting exciting, especially with the launch of cellular phones and the Internet in South Africa. It was a big risk, especially as I had one young daughter, Tamzin and another one on the way, Kayla. Never the less I gave it my all and made a pretty good success out of it. I secured substantial business deals with some of the leading organizations, some of them included the likes of , ABI (Coca Cola), Mercedes Benz, Nampak, VKE Engineering, AEC, Drager, Rosenbauer, Nedcor, Standard Bank, ABSA, Re/Max, iAfrica.com, Aida, ITC, DHL. Some of the projects included: taking the following media publications online - Home Handyman, SA Gardening, PA Homefinder & The Property Professional, developed a solution with ITC for online credit vetting, assisted the SPCA in launching an online presence with an online donations facility and many more.

In 1997 I received a number of really good job offers and decided to join Destiny Electronic Commerce, now part of Datatec / Affinity Logic. While at Destiny I worked on a number of projects that included the agricultural portal for the South African Agricultural Union - Agri-Info, now owned by M-Web. I further brainstormed and developed The Home Channel, now owned by iAfrica.com, which is part of the Primedia group.I have enjoyed a number of other exciting positions, that included Chief Executive - Property Community (The Home Channel, The Property Zone, SAPTG & PPC) while at Metropolis Transactive*. I was Managing Director at ITI Online, an international organization specializing in e-Commerce and Enterprise Relationship Management solutions. I then spent the next 4 and a half years at one of the most interesting and cutting edge organizations around. The business is one of the leaders in online gaming and was started by two truly dynamic individuals. I was appointed as VP Technology and initially focused on setting up a world class technology infrastructure, implemented the necessary structure and procedures to improve the quality and output of the IT departments development arm and finally spent just over 2 years living my passion as VP of Business Development. I scoped and managed to develop in excess of 100 portals focusing on Lotteries, Free Games Portals, Bingo sites, Online Casino Portals, Poker Portals, all with the primary objective of ensuring improved ranking on the top search engines.

In December 2004 I decided that it was time to once again do things for myself , plus morally I knew I couldn’t continue basing my lifestyle on the misfortune of 1,000’s of individuals who were throwing their life savings into a bottomless gambling pit.I then started Trafficonomy.com an online marketing consultancy. The focus of Trafficonomy is firstly as publisher of niche industry portals and secondly as an online games consultancy.

I truly enjoy outdoor activities, as can be derived from the mass of fly fishing and outdoor activity photo’s. I use the time outdoors to spend quality time with my two darling daughter, whom I only see on weekends, as they live with my ex-wife. I currently live in Centurion with my darling wife, Ilonka.

I live my life by the premise of “Live your life to the fullest or live to regret it”
