This weekend saw the running of the Comrades marathon. A gruelling 89 km (56 mile) ultra-marathon that’s seen its share of heart-ache and glory over almost the last century.

The winner this year ultimately smashed Bruce Fordyce’s 21 year record.

Being the geek I am I could not help thinking how similar online affiliate marketing is to the comrades.

It’s an ultra-marathon – not a 21km sprint. Unless you’ve got the endurance to make it you won’t be successful. So many companies start out at a full run (or a speedy sprint) but run out of steam halfway, because they did not plan effectively and pace themselves for the duration.

Just like endurance running - Without planning your online affiliate program, practicing your launch and management best practices, knowing the market, having enough funding to see the project through and relentlessly sticking to the plan – you’ll run out of steam.
